Bus crash on New York interstate injures 27 people

On Nov. 6, a multi-vehicle crash involving a New York City-bound tour bus left 27 people injured. The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. on Interstate 81 just south of Syracuse.

The Pine Hills Trailways bus, which originated in Toronto, was headed south on I-81 with 52 passengers when it collided with a car that had hit a guardrail. It then rear-ended a tractor-trailer that had pulled to the side of the road to help the car's driver. Authorities said 26 passengers on the bus suffered minor injuries, mostly to the chest, lower extremities, back and face, and were taken to local hospitals. The bus driver, who lives in Buffalo, was trapped in the vehicle for two hours before emergency crews could free him. He was transported to a Syracuse hospital with critical injuries. The southbound lanes of I-81 were shut down until 5:30 a.m. as crews cleared the accident wreckage.

Police said the car's driver, a 36-year-old Nedrow man, has been charged with DWI. He was held at Onondaga County Jail on $15,000 bond.

Anyone injured in a car accident caused by a negligent driver may want to consult with an attorney. An attorney may be able to use police reports, witness accounts and crash reconstruction techniques to build a strong case of negligence against a driver. Examples of negligence include distracted driving, reckless driving, texting while driving and drunk driving. If a driver is found responsible for a car crash, they may be legally obligated to pay damages to victims injured in the accident. Injured parties may seek compensation for medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, lost wages and other damages.
