Man on bicycle killed in hit-and-run accident in Brooklyn

The streets of New York can be dangerous for anyone. This is especially true of bicyclists, who have to contend with cars, buses, trains, trucks and all kinds of pedestrians. It's a small wonder there aren't more accidents involving bicyclists than there already are.

A recent hit-and-run crash in Brooklyn reminds us just how devastating such accidents can be. A 46-year-old man on a bicycle was hit by a car that then struck two other vehicles. The driver of the final vehicle that was injured and had to be taken to the hospital. The man on the bicycle, however, suffered much more serious injuries. He was pronounced dead by officials at the scene of the accident.

Witnesses said the driver of the vehicle that caused the accidents appeared to be on the run from someone. When the bicyclist was struck, he was dragged by the car for a distance; the driver didn't stop. When his car finally came to a rest, after striking the other two vehicles, the driver abandoned his vehicle and ran away, in front of several witnesses.

If and when the suspect is apprehended, he is likely to face multiple criminal counts. The family of the man who died, however, will likely want to seek compensation for the loss of their loved one. When someone is struck down at a relatively young age, there are years of earnings that will never be realized, for example; a settlement could help to compensate a grieving family for their losses.
