2 dead and 2 injured in New York accident

At 11:37 p.m. on Dec. 22, a 17-year-old driver was traveling west in an Acura on West Old Country Road in Hicksville just past South Broadway when a 26-year-old attempted to turn left out of a business in a Volkswagen. The Acura collided with the Volkswagen before skidding off the road and striking a tree.

The Volkswagen then struck a Toyota, ejecting the Volkswagen's driver from the vehicle. Detectives believe that an additional eastbound vehicle may have struck the driver in the roadway. Officials pronounced both the driver of the Acura and the driver of the Volkswagen dead at the scene.

Officials transported the Volkswagen's two passengers, ages 24 and 26, to a hospital for treatment. Authorities did not report any injuries for the 55-year-old driver of the Toyota.

When a car accident results in death, the family of the deceased may be able to file for compensation for their loss. This compensation could include reasonable funeral expenses along funds to make up for lost income. In some cases, a spouse could even receive compensation for the loss of companionship. An attorney could advise the family on the types of compensation to which they are entitled and the amount that they may be able to receive.

If the at-fault driver died in the accident and the damages exceed that driver's insurance liability limit or that driver did not have liability insurance coverage, the family may need to recover additional damages from the driver's estate. An attorney could assist the family in negotiating with the insurance company and estate administrator to reach an appropriate settlement and avoid extended court proceedings.
