Drunk driving and texting accidents caused by teenagers

Drivers who are under the age of 21 cause a disproportionate number of fatal drunk driving accidents in New York. Although these underage drivers account for about 10 percent of all licensed drivers in the United States, they are at fault for around 17 percent of the fatal drunk driving accidents that occur each year. Every year, approximately 2,000 teens are killed in drunk driving car accidents throughout the country.

The way that underage drivers drink may cause them to be involved in more accidents than people over the age of 21. Binge drinking amongst teens is a common practice, and some studies have shown that one in six teenagers admits to binge drinking. Studies have also shown that only one in 100 parents of teenagers believe that their child engages in binge drinking.

Driving under the influence was once the primary cause of death for U.S. teenagers until it was surpassed by texting while driving. Now, car accidents that are caused by drivers who are texting behind the wheel kill about 3,000 teens per year. Researchers say that a person who is texting while driving is 23 times more likely to be involved in an accident than a driver who is not engaged in that behavior.

After a car accident, investigators may test all of the drivers who were involved to determine if a driver was intoxicated. Investigators may also look at cellphone data to find out if any of the drivers were distracted by text messages. An attorney may be able to help an injured victim of a car accident to gather police reports and other vital evidence from an accident scene for the purpose of filing a personal injury lawsuit against the responsible party.
