Governor Cuomo extends the deadline for workers’ comp, disability and accidental death benefits
The events of September 11, 2001, changed New York’s skyline and identity forever. But rescue, recovery and clean-up operations by thousands of workers and volunteers have helped to rebuild the city stronger than ever.
To ensure these workers and volunteers get the benefits that they deserve after being injured or disabled in the line of duty, Governor Cuomo recently signed legislation extending the deadline to pursue benefits under the World Trade Center Disability Law. Workers now have until September 11, 2018, to register for benefits.
Under this law, eligible workers and their families may collect benefits for workers’ compensation, disability and accidental death as a result of recovery work. To be eligible, workers (or retirees) must have worked at least 40 hours in the World Trade Center recovery and become disabled as a result. The survivors of workers who died because of their efforts may also pursue benefits.
Governor Cuomo said, “We vow to do whatever we have to do to provide these brave men and women and their families the benefits they deserve.”
Common injuries and disabilities among 9/11 workers
As most New Yorkers remember, Ground Zero was a chaotic scene in the wake of the attacks, with countless hazards to workers and volunteers. Some common injuries that may affect workers include:
- Burns and skin diseases like contact dermatitis
- Injuries caused by falls from height or falling objects
- Psychological conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression
- Respiratory illness
- Toxic exposure
