How dangerous is driving tired?

Everyone knows how dangerous drunk driving is. The chemicals in the blood stream cause delayed reaction times, limit inhibitions and negatively impact coordination. But few people think about the importance of getting a good night’s sleep before driving.

However, the risks of driving exhausted can be just as bad as driving drunk. Keep reading to learn about the dangers of driving while tired.

Tired Driving Can Be as Dangerous as Drunk Driving

According to The Sleep Foundation, the dangers of driving exhausted are comparable to those of drunk driving. The article is clear on the comparison:

Drowsy driving is dangerous because sleep deprivation can have similar effects on your body as drinking alcohol…If you’ve been awake for a full 24 hours and drive—say, after a night where you just couldn’t fall asleep—it’s like you have a blood alcohol level of .10.

Since a .08 blood-alcohol level would be considered drunk in many states, this is a significant statement by The Sleep Foundation.

Impact of Exhausted Driving

Being tired has many of the same physical, mental and emotional affects as being drunk, including:

  • Delayed response time
  • Impaired attention span/inability to pay attention
  • Decreased decision-making skills
  • Increased risk-taking behavior

Protect Yourself and Others on the Road

If you are exhausted, do not risk it. Take a nap, get some coffee, or if possible have someone else drive. You could consider car-pooling or taking public transportation if you are regularly driving tired.

With the highly increased potential for accidents when you are tired, it is simply not worth the risk. Take care of yourself on the busy New York roads and be safe.
