Two reasons to see a doctor immediately after a work injury

Maybe you strained a muscle in your back, got a cut from a boxcutter, or a heavy box was dropped on your toe. The injury isn’t as bad as it could be, so you decide to wait a few days to see if it gets better before going to the doctor. This is not a wise decision. Why?

90 Mississippi individuals lost their lives due to a work injury. Many others sustained work injuries. Injuries at work can be serious. Why is it important to see a doctor right after an injury?

Waiting can hinder recovery

Waiting to go to the doctor to see if the injury clears up on its own can be dangerous, especially if your injuries are severe. A small amount of back pain can turn into a much larger issue, a cut can become infected, a blow to the head could be a concussion that you don’t realize you have.

When you do eventually end up going to the doctor, your recovery time has the possibility of being much longer than it would have if you had gone to the doctor right after the injury occurred.

Waiting can affect a workers’ comp claim

Not only can waiting to go to the doctor immediately after an accident harm yourself, it can also put a workers’ compensation claim in jeopardy. Workers’ compensation cases aim to prove that the injury occurred at work in order for the employee to receive medical benefits and wage replacement. If you wait to go to the doctor, your employer may attempt to say that your injuries did not occur at work.

If and when a work injury occurs, remember that it is always better to be safe than sorry, and see a doctor right away.
